Gallery is web-based software that lets you manage your photos in albums via an intuitive interface on the BHCC website. Photo management includes easy image uploading, image resizing, automatic thumbnail creation, rotation, captioning and more. It also allows the BHCC community to interact by allowing you to leave comments on others' photos. Gallery is also secure, so only you can log-in and change your personal album by adding or deleting photos; and visitors can view small versions of your photos (Club members can view photos up to 1024 pixels).
How do I obtain a personal album? This gallery is for BHCC members only. The recommended way to obtain a personal album is to register by posting a request in the Club's forum (www.bhcc-online.org/forum), in 'BHCC Members' Gallery - Apply here', providing your full name and membership number. Your album will usually be created within 2 days, and you will receive a confirmatory email. If your album has not appeared within 7 days, please contact the gallery administrator, Rich Cutler.
After registering, you will see an empty album titled with your name. You can now create your first subalbum, or upload your first photo. The function of the various buttons and commands are listed below. When a photo is uploaded, a thumbnail is created: clicking on this thumbnail opens a large version of the photo. The default size is 800 pixels, but you can choose to view the photo at different sizes: 400, 600, 800 or 1024 pixels – the last can be viewed only by logged-in members. The first photo uploaded to an album will remain the thumbnail to that album until you change it (use the 'Make highlight' command). An album page contains thumbnails of up to 12 albums or photos, which can be arranged in any order you wish. Note that thumbnails of photos are identified by a shadow effect,
while album thumbnails have a white border and resemble a stack
of photos (note also the book icon
Photos to be uploaded should conform to the following: Format: JPG or BMP Gallery can only display JPG or BMP images: do not upload other file types such as TIF or PSD. It's recommended that the longest edge of a photo to be uploaded
is exactly 1024 pixels. Images larger than 1024 pixels can be
uploaded, but will be down-sized automatically by Gallery, so
uploading oversize images gains nothing. Also, the EXIF data are
stripped out of images larger than 1024 pixels, so your photos
will not show the photo properties icon Uploading images smaller than 1024 pixels is not recommended as Gallery won't enlarge them, restricting the maximum size of photos that visitors to your album will see. Large files (over 1 MB) may give Gallery indigestion, and fail to upload. Lastly, if applicable to your photos, ensure that they have either an sRGB profile or no embedded profile, so that their colours display accurately.
The Add Photos page To upload a photo, click the first Browse button on the Add Photos page, and select your photo. Next, type a caption, if you want one. Repeat this for all the photos you wish to upload, clicking on More Upload Boxes... if necessary. The filename is used to create the photograph title by default, so consider using a meaningful name (eg 'Old Brickworks.jpg'). This setting can be overridden in the title menu near the foot of the Add Photos page: if you want Gallery to ignore the filename and to title the photograph using your own text, type the title in the photograph's caption box, and set the title menu options as below:
When you've selected all your photos, click on the Upload Photos button. Gallery will now upload your files, displaying the following message at the bottom of your browser window:
The Gallery page will inform you when your photos have finished uploading – this may take several minutes.
What do the commands and menus do?
Some text boxes have buttons above them that can be used to style your text:
To style your text, click on a button, type your text, then click on the same button when you wish to turn off that style (the button displays an asterisk when it's still active). Clicking the buttons enters some codes, eg the bold button encloses the text within and . You could type the codes, but clicking a button is quicker. You can nest styles, eg Hello will display Hello in your gallery.
Note: If the cursor is in front of an already typed word and a button pressed, the code is placed at the end of the paragraph – either type the codes manually, or cut and paste them into the correct positions.
How do I search for something? The sidebar contains a search box: to find something, simply type what you're looking for into the box, and press the Enter key on your keyboard. A standard search done in this way will examine the following blocks of text: descriptions, keywords, summaries, titles, comments. The advanced search option allows you to specify which of these blocks of text you wish to include or exclude from the search.
A slideshow is a way of viewing all the photos in an album without having to do so manually: in slideshow mode, a new photo will appear automatically, after a short delay. Clicking on the icon
