About us

The BHCC is a very active, high-profile photographic society with over 150 members.

Our aim is to encourage members to improve their photography, both artistically and technically. Despite our name, we rarely talk about cameras – it's the photograph that interests us!

Our members are of all ages and abilities, and we welcome newcomers to photography as well as those with experience. Members' interests cover all photographic genres, from landscape and nature to photojournalism and contemporary image-making, using both film and digital cameras

New members and visitors are normally very welcome but due to capacity problems at our premises, there is currently a freeze on accepting new members. When the freeze is lifted you can come and be our guests for a week or two, free of charge, to see if you'd like to join. We look forward to seeing you

What we do

Club members are grouped according to their level of photographic experience. The A Group is for experienced photographers, the B Group is for those with less experience, including newcomers to photography – you choose which level you wish to join initially. Our programme includes workshops, and certain Thursday evenings are specifically designed with B Group members in mind. If you are already more experienced, perhaps wishing to gain a Royal Photographic Society qualification, we have club members willing to offer support and advice. Maybe you have particular skills you would be willing to share with us.

We encourage members to enter images on competition evenings, to have their work assessed by a range of experienced photographers from both outside and within the club. Each photograph is critiqued on its own merits and is not compared with other entries: to develop our skills, we need friendly, constructive feedback about the images we create.

Owing to our high profile, we are able to attract visiting speakers from around the country to give illustrated talks on all aspects of photography.

We have an active digital group. In addition to the listed meetings, informal digital instruction and practical groups are hosted with content tailored to suit the requirements of those wishing to attend. Naturally, we also attract many traditional darkroom workers. All members are able to show their work on our website.

Members are encouraged to submit entries to external events and to our own exhibitions, which we hold in public venues. We are also affiliated to the Photographic Alliance of Great Britain (PAGB) through the Surrey Photographic Association (SPA), and participate in SPA functions.

You will rapidly see an improvement in your photography after joining us!

Important Membership News

Monday 26th October 2009

Brighton and Hove Camera club has experienced unprecedented growth over the last few years and we have reached our membership capacity in our current premises. For health and safety reasons we regret that, for the moment, we are unable to accept new members. We will be undertaking an urgent review of the situation and hope that we will be able to accept new members in the near future.

This decision comes hard as we have always prided ourselves in being open and welcoming to everyone with an interest in photography. In the meantime please feel free to add your name to our and we will get in contact as soon as a place becomes available.

The information shown below is subject to the membership list being opened again.

How ?

Once enrolled the young member must be accompanied by an appropriate adult and remain under their direct supervision during all Club meetings and activities until they attain the age of 18 years.

When?

The Club's main programme runs from September to May. We meet every Tuesday at 7.30 pm, and finish between 9.30 and 10.00 pm, with a coffee break mid-way. There are also additional Thursday evening meetings, also starting at 7.30 pm, many with new members in mind. Members often visit a local pub at the end of the evening (The Westbourne). We also meet for outings during the summer.
