BHCC Photofringe Exhibition |
The Brighton Photo Fringe is organising a large number of exhibitions this autumn in conjunction with the Brighton Photo Biennial.
BHCC has taken the opportunity to stage the largest of these exhibitions at the Old Market, Upper Market Street , from 3rd October running through until 15th November, 2008.
To link in loosely with the Photo Bienniel theme of WAR, the theme for BHCC’s exhibition is:
“CONFLICT: An interpretation”
We need many high quality prints from BHCC members to make this an impressive and memorable exhibition. Our images can be expected to be viewed by hundreds of people, many of which will be photographers or people with a strong interest in photography, not least because The Old Market is the chosen venue for the Photo Fringe official launch party!
Images need not be restricted to conflicts between people or indeed military conflict but may depict conflict of any kind. Interesting images in this regard from our members on-line galleries are, for example: Michael Grace’s ‘Bullfight’, Andy Mills’ ‘Paris Olympic Torch Protest’, Rob Tunstall’s ‘Cold Shoulder’, Dave Tormey’s ‘I love my Cannon’, Heather Buckley’s ‘Caravan of Desires’.
Submission of prints
There is a £2 entry fee per print which is refundable if the print doesn’t make it into the exhibition - so submitting extra prints ‘just in case’, won’t cost you. As usual, prints will need to be submitted in 40x50 mounts (preferably white / off white / cream colour).
I will be at a central Hove address to collect prints and your entry money on the mornings of Sunday 14th September and Sunday 21st September, 9.30am – 1.00pm. Please contact me on exhibitions@bhcc-online.org or 07770 350699 if you don’t already have the address (sent out via e-mail to members on 30/08).
Late entries will be accepted at the first club night on 23rd September, though given the short time between then and the exhibition we urge you to please let us have your photos earlier than this so that we can see how we’re doing for prints and can start to plan.
N.B. Your club annual membership subscription must be paid by 1st October to enable us to exhibit your print.
Thank you for your attention – now please, get snapping!!

As you may know, a small working party of Club members has been working on a revised Club Constitution over the last few months.
The revision of the Constitution has been prepared with a couple of thoughts in mind. Firstly, later in the year we intend to submit an application for a grant from the Lottery fund to allow us to bring our projection system up to date. For the application to be successful the Lottery Grant rules require certain conditions to be met of the applying organization and this draft addresses those conditions. Secondly, it has been realised for a while that the existing set of rules are inadequate for Club’s future requirements so we have tackled some of those issues too.
The working party now feels the draft is ready for general view and welcomes any further comments from the Club membership.
You can download the draft here :- Draft BHCC Constitution 2008-v10.pdf
You can download the draft showing revisions here :-
Draft BHCC Constitution 2008-v10 showing revisions.pdf
It is a bit hard to follow but may be worth a quick look if you are interested.
The existing Rules (2001) can be found here :-
bhcc_club_rules_2001.pdf
It is expected to put this Constitution to a vote of the Club members at an EGM to be called for Tuesday September 30th 2008.
You can contact the Constitution working party with comments or questions by e-mail here :- constitution@bhcc-online.org
Here is some important information from the London Salon regarding their exhibition:-
"Unfortunately, due to the problem with the glass roof in the Atrium, we cannot hold The London Salon Exhibition at the Cottons Centre this year
We are very disappointed, but these are obviously circumstances beyond our control and we hope that you will be understanding.
The Official Opening of the London Salon Exhibition at Smethwick will be at 2.30pm on Saturday July 19th at The Old Schoolhouse, Churchbridge, Oldbury. We hope you will be able to support the Salon and attend this event.
It may be possible for the exhibition to be hung earlier than this date.
Please contact Alan Millward 01217042925 for details of this."
The Cottons Centre, where the exhibition will be held, has been temporarily closed as the roof has been damaged. This means that the London Salon Exhibition is likely to be cancelled: a final decision will be made on Saturday 21 June. Once we know the outcome, we will update this note.

Here is a brief summary of the announcement made at last night’s meeting of the club by the Chairman, David Miles.
The BHCC Council has decided to drop the Intermediate Group and just have the two groups:-
The Projected Image competitions will stay the same as this year (4 competitions with two images allowed in each and no catch ups allowed)
Slides will no longer be permitted for entry into these competitions.
The Print Competitions will change as follows:-
There will be five competitions with no speciality subject. Two prints from each member in the new combined I and A class will be allowed per competition.
There will be two competitions where the competition will have two speciality subjects. One print will be allowed per speciality subject.
There will be a new submission process for print competitions. Members will no longer be expected to submit their prints a week in advance. Instead they will bring them along on the competition evening. However, members will be required to submit a notice of their image titles in advance via the club's website or by paper form for those without web access. Further details of the new process will be made available to club members before the start of next season.
Rules for the Entry Group Print competitons will remain the same as this season.
Thanks once again to Gerry Nevill for organising the recent studio night at the ELC. Great fun was had by all.
If anybody would like to show some of their results from the evening then please upload your pictures to the club’s website using the usual competition process. We will show the pictures to the rest of the club at the next projected image competition on April 8th.
Visit bhcc-online.org/competitions , select yourself from the dropdown list and enter your membership number. Select “Studio Night” from the Competitions drop-down list.
If there are any brand-new members who do not appear on the membership list yet, please email me your name and membership number and I will add you to the database.

As Colin Miller announced at a recent club meeting, we intend to produce
a BHCC publicly CD containing a collection of member’s photographs. This
CD will be used for various purposes but initially it is intended to be
passed to some local galleries to see if we can arrange exhibitions of
our collective work.
You can upload your candidate images to the club’s website using the project
image competition system at www.bhcc-online.org/competitions.
Enter Your membership number on the first page and then select “Photos
for Club Publicity CD” from the drop-down list you will find on the second
page.
If you intend to submit prints then these will have to be brought into
the club and they will then be photographed.
The closing date is still not decided but is probably to be late January.
Please speak to Colin Miller or Steve Farmer if you have any questions
about the CD. Speak to John Hazard if you have any difficulty uploading
your images.
You may not find this the most exciting of topics but
in the spirit of openness and clarity, and to show that everyone can be
as involved in the Club as they wish to be, the latest club accounts can
be found in Adobe Acrobat format by clicking here.
There are more competitions this season but each member
can submit fewer entries per compeition - usually just one submission.

The newest members of one of the most established and recognised camera clubs in the country staged an exhibition of their work at The Grange Art Gallery, Rottingdean, between 12 and 24 July 2007.
Underexposed was a collection of over 70 images from these new members, covering a range of photographic styles from landscape and natural history to street and documentary photography. Several members have been presented with Distinctions from the Royal Photographic Society.
Although the exhibition is now CLOSED, more information about it is given here.
Six of our members have had prints accepted
for this year's prestigious
London Salon of Photography 2007 Exhibition. The exhibition is now open
closed but was displayed at The Camera Club, Kennington, London and Smethwick
Photographic Society. To view the gallery of accepted images to the Salon
and find out more about the exhibitions click here.
Two of our members have had prints accepted for the 150th International Print Exhibition which was arranged by the Royal Photographic Society. There were 2,200 entries from 33 countries and of these just 120 prints were selected. Two of these were from Trevor Gellard FRPS and one was from Tony Bowall ARPS. Congratulations to both of them. This exhibition is now closed but was on display in both London and Bath. Further details can be found on the RPS website.
A little earlier in the year five of our members had prints accepted for the Royal Photographic Society 2007 Members' Print Exhibition. You can see the pictures at the bottom of this page ordered by the member's name. Only 100 prints were accepted from the whole of the RPS so the club is very well represented!
Our Public Exhibition as part of the Brighton Festival Exhibition at the Old Market Arts Centre in hove is now CLOSED. This opened on 5th May and ran until the end of the month. This exhibition featured 22 images on the theme of CHILDREN'S BOOK TITLES where children were encouraged to guess the title of the book depicted in the photo. In addition to this there were about 50 other photos from club members on display.
To read about what you missed at the last show you can still click here!
In March and April this year FOUR of our members - Tony Bowall, David Gerrard, David Leach, and Howard Shaw were awarded their Associateships of the Royal Photographic Society and ALL FOUR of the panels presented were retained by the Society for teaching purposes. Also in April SEVEN other club members were successfully awarded their Licentiateships of the society.
Way back in 2006 yet another of our members - Wayne Grundy - was awarded his Associateship of the Royal Photographic Society (ARPS). His complete portfolio can be seen on this site by following the link below.
In addition to this good news nine Club members achieved their Licentiateships of the RPS on 30th March (2006). All nine can now use the letters LRPS after their names.
Nine successful Licentiateships is the largest number from a single club since the RPS was formed in 1853!.
For information about these distinctions click here. To find out more about the individual club members that have just been awarded these distinctions and to see all 15 pictures from Wayne's ARPS Panel click here!
