Tom Pilston

Bio

British photojournalist (b. 1963) based in Oxford. Worked in music and fashion photography before moving into photojournalism in the late 1980s; staff photographer for the Independent on Sunday (from 1989) and the Independent (from 1996), covering the UK and abroad (Bosnia, Burma, Sudan, Kosovo). Went freelance in 2007, covering Obama's first election and conflicts in Syria, Kashmir, Iraq and Afghanistan. Clients include Sunday Times Magazine, The Guardian, FT, The Times, Washington Post, New York Times and NGOs (Save the Children, UNICEF, Christian Aid). Winner of World Press Photo, Nikon and Amnesty International awards; now also mentors young documentary photographers.

Photography style & work

Documentary photojournalist known for long-form photo essays and conflict/humanitarian reportage from war zones (Syria, Kosovo, Bosnia, Kashmir, Sudan) and major news events (Obama's election, 2015 Paris attacks, UK elections, COVID-19 ICU wards). Also produces portrait and corporate/promotional work (British Airways, M&S, Pashley Cycles). Style blends hard-news photojournalism with intimate, human-focused storytelling.
