Another door opens. The Photography of Tom Pilston.

So what does a nervous, poorly educated, easily distracted, romantic, rebel outsider, who loves stories, but can’t make sense of words, do?   He picks up a camera.

I haven’t really put down that camera since I was 6 years old and it's helped me make sense of the world I have travelled through.  Every photograph is a story, a short, a poem or an epic. And when a huge part of my life has been spent working in Newspapers and Magazines

I’ve realised that a photograph, a story, is pointless if it sits in a bottom draw, on a hard drive or hung in a private collection. It needs to be out in the world from whence it came. Informing, illuminating, celebrating and holding to account.

I have photographed birth, death, war and peace, politics and sport, wealth, poverty, triumph and tragedy. I have recorded humanity at its best and at its worst, right up to this age of fake news, bullying world leaders and technology that lies easily, controls our lives more than we think and which now potentially threatens our very existence. 

We need intelligent, ethical and brave photojournalists more than ever before. I am proud to have been one. Although imperfect and flawed, I have attempted to make some kind of sense of the real world as I saw it.

I don’t know what else a could have done.
